How to choose a Tent for a family of 4 - Khyam

At Khyam, we have over 30 years of experience designing, manufacturing, and providing customers with family tents to enjoy the great outdoors. Throughout the past several decades, we have helped campers looking for anything and everything, from quick pitch tents for biketrails  to providing advice on how to choose a tent.

One of the questions we get asked the most is what is a good family tent? The answer depends on a wide range of factors such as budget, convenience, campsite limitations, and where you plan to go with your Khyam tent. We’re going to look at what sets the best 4-man tents in the UK apart and what you should look for when buying the best family tent available.

WHAT IS A GOOD FAMILY TENT?

Camping under the stars is a great way to build lasting memories with your kids and enjoy the stunning natural surroundings of the English countryside. But what makes a good family tent? To figure this out you’ll need to consider several factors such as size (pack size and assembled size), durability, waterproof rating, set-up time, and any other unique features.

A family tent should tick all the boxes your family needs. Do you have young children or older kids that need more room? Is your family interested in exploring rough and rugged terrain or do you want to go to a campsite with swimming pools and power points?

To help you make sense of what you want to look for, here are some of our top Khyam tents for a family of 4 to help you consider your family’s needs.

HOW BIG IS A FAMILY TENT?

The secret to a good family camping trip is comfort. Having enough room to sleep and live makes enjoying the natural environment that much easier to enjoy. That being said, the right size tent is whatever you need it to be. If you and your partner have a young child then a two or three person tent will suffice. For families with older children or more than one child, a four-man tent is the perfect size for a family of four.

We also offer completely bespoke tents, like our Screenhub or driveaway awnings which give you the freedom to add annexe tents as and when you need them.

The right size tent also depends on the length of your stay. The general rule of thumb is that a 4-man tent is ideal for a group of 4 people for a short break, while sizing up is recommended for longer holidays. If you’re planning a long trip or think you will need more space, then a 6-man tent might be your preferred option, see our AirTek 6 to find out more.

At Khyam, our tents are designed with ample space for a comfortable night’s sleep and maximum headroom space so you can recreate the comforts of home out in the countryside. WHAT IS THE EASIEST FAMILY TENT TO SET UP?

All tents broadly fall into three different types, based on their structure. These are poled tents, inflatable tents, and pop-up tents.

Pop-up tents are the easiest to set up as they are the smallest, lightest, and generally least complicated structures. However, to accommodate the simple pop-up, pop-down design these tents have to be streamlined which may mean fewer rooms, less headroom, and fewer entry points.

Inflatable tents combine the convenience of a semi-automated set up with the luxury of larger, more complex tents. Khyam inflatable tents, for example, use high pressure air tubes to provide a sturdy structure that can be inflated in a matter of minutes.

Poled tents require the most setup time, although with modern designs this process is a lot simpler than it was 20 or 30 years ago. Our poled tents use lightweight yet tough poles that are easy to slot into the sewn-in flysheet. This takes no time at all and with a few practice tries can be sped up even more.
